The History of Thenamaris
Scroll for more1972
A strong start
Thenamaris was established in 1972 in Piraeus, Greece, and started with a fleet of eight dry cargo vessels under management. The company grew well in its early years; in 1976 we placed our first newbuildings contract on behalf of our principals with the Namura shipyard in Japan to construct three 26,000 deadweight tons bulk carriers.
By 1978 we were managing 50 vessels with a combined deadweight of more than 900,000 tons. These were bulk carriers, ore/oil carriers, OBO log/bulk carriers, car carriers, tween deckers, heavy lifters, geared ore carriers and a chemical tanker.
1980s
Growing the fleet
By the early 1980s Thenamaris was internationally recognized as a successful and reliable ship manager. By the mid-80s we were also managing tankers, including Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCC) and Ultra Large Crude Carriers (ULCC).
During the decade we established collaboration with various crewing agencies including Thenamaris Philippines Inc., which manage the recruitment, training and development of the qualified officers and marine personnel employed on the vessels under our management.
Through astute management, by the end of the 1980s the size of the managed fleet increased to a deadweight capacity of 3 million tons, carrying on behalf of major global traders and charterers an average of 20 million tons of liquid cargos and another 20 million tons of dry bulk cargoes each year.
In 1986 our shore-based employees moved into a specially-designed office in Vouliagmeni, Athens.
1990s - 2000s
Modernizing the fleet
Within the 1990s Thenamaris coordinated, on behalf of its principals, a number of ambitious newbuilding projects, mainly focused on double-hulled tankers.
During the first decade of the 21st century the company’s principals disposed of older managed tonnage and by the time the newbuildings entered into service the average age of the ships under management halved from 20 years in the mid-90s to 10 years in 2005.
2010 - 2020
Further growth and diversification
In 2011 Thenamaris LNG Inc. was established to undertake the management of three high-specification LNG carriers built at the Samsung Heavy Industries and delivered in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Thenamaris LNG continued to grow its managed fleet with the delivery of 2 LPG carriers in 2017 built at the Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, and 2 LNG X-DF carriers built at the Hyundai Heavy Industries in 2020 and 2021.
In 2018 Thenamaris Singapore commenced operations, providing commercial management services to the managed tanker and bulk carrier fleets trading in the Asia Pacific market.
In 2020 Thenamaris ConBulk Inc. was established to facilitate focus on the management of containerships and bulk carriers, which until then were managed by Thenamaris together with the tanker fleet of vessels.
